For fans of MachineGames’ critically acclaimed take on the Wolfenstein franchise, the wait for a proper conclusion to B.J. Blazkowicz’s story has been a long one. After the explosive finale of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and the subsequent co-op spin-off Youngblood, the future of the series has been a source of much speculation. Now, in a new documentary from YouTube channel Noclip, developers at MachineGames have officially confirmed what many have long suspected: the story was always intended to be a trilogy, and they are not done with B.J. yet.

A Trilogy in the Making from Day One

In the documentary, MachineGames co-founder and studio head Jerk Gustafsson revealed that the narrative arc for B.J. Blazkowicz was mapped out long before the first game, Wolfenstein: The New Order, was released in 2014. “We have always seen this as a trilogy,” Gustafsson stated. “That journey, for B.J., even during those first weeks at id [Software], when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for, at least, that character. What will happen in the second one? What will happen in the third one?”

Gustafsson’s comments provide a clear road map for the series’ narrative, which has evolved from a personal journey in the first game to a broader fight for a resistance in the sequel. He explained that The New Order was “very much about B.J. and how he actually… understands that the Nazis have won the war, but it’s also a very personal journey for him.” He continued, “Then, moving into New Colossus, then we move into a wider group of people around you, being part of the resistance, something bigger and something also like a family to you.” This structure suggests that a third game would likely bring Blazkowicz’s personal and political struggles to a powerful and final conclusion.

The confirmation that the trilogy is still a goal for the studio is welcome news, especially after the team has been busy with other high-profile projects. Following the release of the DLC for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, MachineGames is now in a position to potentially return to the franchise that helped put them on the map. While an official greenlight from parent company Microsoft has not been announced, the studio’s clear desire to finish the story is a strong indication that fans have not seen the last of B.J. Blazkowicz.

Setting the Record Straight on Spin-offs and the Future

The developers also took the opportunity to clarify the role of the series’ spin-off titles. Gustafsson explained that the prequel, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, was originally planned as DLC for the second game, while Wolfenstein: Youngblood was always envisioned as a separate, co-op-focused title. This is an important distinction, as Youngblood‘s mixed reception led to some concern that it had derailed the series. The developers’ comments now make it clear that the main storyline remains distinct and on track, despite the existence of the spin-offs.

The news is particularly exciting because it promises a proper continuation of the main narrative, which was last seen in The New Colossus. The third game would presumably continue Blazkowicz’s fight against Frau Engel and the Nazi regime, and with MachineGames’ continued commitment to bold, narrative-driven storytelling, it is sure to be an impactful finale.
